Mile 0.0: Car Shops
The L&PS underestimated their requirements in 1916 when building the maintenance shops for its new roster of electric rolling stock. The 148 x 202 foot building, finished in June, was immediately found to be inadequate. Construction began only 4 months later to add a third story to the office section and lengthen the shops by 72 feet. With four service tracks, a machine shop and a carpentry shop, the facility handled all repair and rebuilding tasks keeping the unique L&PS rolling stock operational for nearly 50 years. Although all tracks have been removed, the building exists today ( Feb 2005 ), occupied by a fruit wholesaling business.
Here's a 1927 view looking south. Offices are located in the three story section to the right. The track immediately to the left of the building was used for storage of passenger rolling stock. The next track east, here occupied by a four car passenger train, is the railroad's main line.
